The Imperfect Tense

The imperfect tense is used to talk about the past in narrative.

You take the stem and add the following endings:
ich spielte
du spieltest
er/sie/es spielte
wir spielten
ihr spieltet
sie/Sie spielten

All the model verbs are regular in the imperfect (they also have no umlauts).

Ich durfte (I was allowed to )
du durftset etc.

E.g. I painted a picture. = Ich malte ein Bild.
I didn't like the homework. = Ich mochte nicht die Hausaufgaben.

A few weak verbs change their stem in the imperfect:

Bringen - Ich bratche - to bring
Denken - Ich dachte - to think
Wissen - Ich wusste - to know a thing
Verbringen - Ich verbrachte - to spend time
Kennen - Ich kannte - to know a person
Rennen - Ich rannte - to run

Weak verbs ending in 'd', 't', 'n' or 'm' add an 'e' before the imperfect endings.
E.g. Arbeiten = ich arbeitete

Irregular Endings:

ich fuhr (no ending)
du fuhrst
er fuhr (no ending)
wir fuhren
ihr fuhrt
sie fuhren
